Woodchips
Woodworking Club
Meeting Minutes
June 10, 2010

Don
Schramski opened the meeting at 2:30 p.m. Other board members present were Forrest
Fetherolf, Bob Haughey, and Dick Hollis.
15 general members were also in attendance, for a total of 19 out of 167
current members.
SECRETARY:
Dick
reviewed May’s minutes, which were approved as written.
FINANCIAL:
The
club currently has a balance of$7,771.36 which includes $2,000 of reserve
funds. Currently there are no receivables.
MEMBERSHIP:
Three
new members have joined Woodchips in the past month. There are currently 41
Foremen and 27 Monitors.
Old Business:
OPERATIONS:
The
board asked all members to submit suggestions for replacing or updating
equipment which will be placed on a “wish list” for further dialogue.
Since
there have been no further suggestions submitted for the Disciplinary Policy
presented by the board last month, the policy will be added to the Shop
Operational Manual identified as Exhibit “B”.
Shop
Projects:
Forrest
reported there are currently no projects being worked on in the shop, however
there are four outstanding requests for quotes that Forrest is currently
pursuing.
The subject this month discussed during the “What
is it” segment of the meeting was miter jigs. Additionally, Forrest informed
the membership of a router bit available for use that was designed to create an
almost perfect corner joint. The bit and sample corner joint were passed around
to all members.
Safety:
The Board reported that there have been 31 safe
working days at Woodchips since the previous report.
The board reported that there have been red lines
drawn on the working surfaces of both the dual bench sander and the 20” upright
sander. These lines are intended to provide a warning to the operator that the
operator’s fingers should not be placed closer than 1” to the working surface
of the moving sander. The members were also reminded to ensure that all moving
equipment comes to a complete stop prior to leaving the work area.
Eckhard informed the membership of potential
damage and safety concerns with use of the Festool compound miter saw. Eckhard
suggested when cutting narrow taller stock, the work piece should be placed
tight against the horizontal work surface and the vertical back stop. The saw
and blade should then be operated as a miter saw and not a sliding miter saw;
that is, down through the wood In this manner the
force and direction of the blade will push the work piece down and against the
backstop when contacting the work piece. If operated as a sliding miter saw,
the force and direction of the work piece is up and against the backstop, which
will tend to pull the piece off the horizontal work surface. The miter saw
cluster has been revised to reflect this change and all members are encouraged
to re-read the cluster.
Eckhard also suggested that all members intending
to attend cluster training visit the Woodchips web site and familiarize them
with the cluster training for that subject prior to taking the class. In this
manner the member will have some knowledge and understanding of the equipment
and be able to ask more informed questions and more fully participate in
training.
NEW BUSINESS:
The
board informed the membership that we will continue the current card reader
access process for member’s access to the shop. All Monitors and Foremen have been
issued shop access cards which are coded to reflect when each member has access
to the shop and rear gate any time Independence Center is open. Monitors shall
have access on Thursday thru Saturday, 8:30 – 2:30. All members are required to
check in at the Independence Center monitor’s desk with their SCA member’s
card every day they use the shop. The first person to arrive at the shop
(Monitor
or Foreman) will then open the east door via new access card and proceed to
unlock the north double doors, providing access to all members. Opening and
readying the shop for use shall follow the guide lines as
explained in the shop opening check list. Closing up
the shop shall reference the shop closing check list. The last person to leave
the shop (either the Foreman or Monitor on duty) will then ensure that the
double doors are locked and that the east door is secured upon leaving.
Don
Schramski commended Ken Andersen for all the hard work Ken went through to
reorganize and clean up of all the operational guides and laminate the indexes
for our shop tools and machine manuals. Thank you, Ken.
Don
reminded all members that the shop will be closed next week from June 14th
through June 17th so that connection of the new emergency generator
can be performed. If the work is completed sooner than expected Dick Hollis
will notify all members via e-mail.
The
board reminded all members that there will be no July General Members Meeting.
The
board informed members that the shop will be shut down on July 5th so
that general maintenance and dusting of the shop may be accomplished by RMI.
The
board informed all members that all new members are required to take the shop
orientation class within 60 days of joining the club. Those current new members
who have still not taken the orientation class shall also be required to take
the class within 60 days beginning July 1, 2010.
The
board informed the membership that Gary Fox has suggested improving the
Woodchip’s web site by creating a link from the cluster training schedule
directly to the class instructor. This would eliminate having to cut and paste
the instructor’s e-mail information and make it easier for the member to
request training directly with the instructor. The board unanimously approved
the suggestion and directed Gary and Dave Cartier to work out the details.
During
the Q&A period, a member asked about the storage container security since
we do not have a lock on the doors. Forrest informed the membership that it did
not appear to be a problem presently but if things change, consideration will
be given to securing the container.
The meeting adjourned at 3:00 pm.
